At the rate that freelancing, consulting and contracting jobs are growing independent workers could take over the work force by 2020. More than 16 million Americans already work as freelancers, contract workers or consultants. By 2020, Gene Zaino, CEO of MBO Partners, predicts that America’s independent work force could soar to 65 to 70 million workers!
Calling independent workers the “pioneers of the next era,” Zaino said the majority of independent workers are not forced to go solo but choose to work independently, attracted by the flexibility and personal control independent employment offers.
While freelancers and other independent workers still face hurdles in marketing themselves and developing reliable income streams, among others, Zaino noted that innovations in technology and mobile technology in particular “unshackle” workers, allowing them to seek new work opportunities in the virtual world that are not tied to time or location.
