For people who have spent months beating the bushes for a job, being asked to pay yet another price for a situation they can’t control is the last straw!

Workers know that having an employment gap in their resume can put them at a disadvantage when they look for a job; but they have reasonably expected employers to take the extraordinary economic conditions into consideration and be forgiving about recession-caused employment gaps. But according to an article in The New York Times, employers from a broad cross-section of the employment spectrum, from fast-food chains to large corporations, are discriminating against unemployed workers.

It’s interesting to take a look at the most common reasons employers give for not hiring unemployed workers:

  • Atrophy of job skills from disuse.
  • Failure to keep up with new technology and updates necessitating retraining.
  • Loss of useful business contacts and networking connections.
  • Concern about ability to return to demanding 9-to-5 schedule.

At the core of each concern seems to be the groundless assumption that unemployed workers will be less efficient, less knowledgeable and less productive than their employed peers.
